The History of the Minnesota State Flag
The Minnesota state flag, originally adopted in 1957, served as a vibrant symbol of the state's heritage for decades. The flag featured a royal blue field with the state seal in the center, surrounded by a wreath of lady’s slippers, the state flower. The seal depicted a pioneer plowing a field with a Native American riding a horse in the background, symbolizing the state's agricultural roots and indigenous history. Encircling the seal were 19 stars, representing Minnesota as the 19th state to join the Union, with the largest star at the top signifying the North Star.
In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature established the State Emblems Redesign Commission to create a new flag and seal that more accurately reflected the state's diverse cultural communities. After extensive public input and multiple rounds of selection, the final design was chosen on December 19, 2023. The new flag, adopted on May 11, 2024, features a light blue field with a dark blue silhouette of Minnesota on the hoist side and a simplified eight-pointed star in the center.
