The History of the American Flag

The American flag, known as the "Stars and Stripes," is more than a piece of fabric; it is a powerful emblem of freedom, unity, and the enduring spirit of the United States. Adopted on June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress, the flag’s original design featured thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field, symbolizing the original thirteen colonies united in their fight for independence.

As the nation grew, the flag evolved. Today, it proudly displays fifty stars, each representing a state, while the thirteen stripes remain a tribute to the nation's revolutionary roots. The red stripes stand for valor and bravery, the white for purity and innocence, and the blue field for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

The American flag has borne witness to the country’s defining moments—from the Revolutionary War to the moon landing, from battles fought for freedom to acts of compassion in times of disaster. It has been a symbol of hope for immigrants seeking a new life and a beacon of liberty for those oppressed.

Flying high over schools, homes, and government buildings, the flag embodies the pride and resilience of the American people. Its stars and stripes remind us of the sacrifices made for freedom and the enduring belief in the American dream.
